So, I'm catching up on "And Just Like That" where I did see S1 and skipped S2 (due to cable limitations). I'm on S3 and writing this after Episode 7. (Note: I did not watch S3 E1 because I heard it was so cringe, I couldn't even do it and started S3 E2). By the way, after I completed the entire S&TC series, I wrote a blog post here and I wrote about the movie in 2008 when it came out.
Apparently, per the feedback online, it seems everyone is hate-watching this. I'm not doing that - I'm surprised watching. I've listened to interviews with Michael Patrick King, who is the producer/director/writer of the show. I've listened to a number of "Are you a Charlotte" podcasts with Kristen Davis as she interviews cast mates and writers. I'm psyched for the way the "characters will grow but still be the same person." That sounds great.. but I'm heavily confused how they're achieving this.
Carrie: I do see moments of growth with her discussions with Aiden on how she is accepting the relationship given his current life. What I don't understand is how the AJLT writers forgot she's a widow. She was married and together with Big for however long. She should still talk about her husband - "Big and I went here.. Oh, he used to like this yogurt and you ate it all, Miranda." There would be photos around the apartment and memories. You can move on, but you shouldn't erase your partner. Apparently, they dealt with her widowhood in S1 and that's it.
They want Carrie to be fun single girl again. Bringing Aiden back is too easy for them -- although their logic was that Carrie had "2 great loves" and this is the second route. But, she should be different - a widow navigating all this in her late 50's.
Speaking of Aiden, I'm torn on him. I have loved John Corbett since "Northern Exposure" in 1992 and in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" movies. I love seeing Aiden as a family man with his sons. But, I don't understand what happened to him. He broke her window, decided to spend hours going to Scranton when he has limited time to visit her, guilty about sleeping with his ex, and still went ahead with Carrie. Ugh. He was the most rooted person before.
Oh, and now she's going from writing creative nonfiction essays/memoir to historical fiction? Hm.. ok, I get it.. you want to dip your toes in other genres. Cool. But give some respect to the art of novel writing.
Here's my alternate story line that no one asked for: Carrie wants to switch genres so she takes a novel writing course at the New School or NYU or somewhere close to her. (She would never do an online class, so don't even think of that). Her professor is acclaimed author Duncan. They quibble but have that connection. You have a lot of potential story lines there - she takes his critiques personally, even though it's not meant to be personal but she thinks it's all about her. His syllabus forces her read the first damn historical fiction novel of her life. They meet after class to discuss. He suggests they meet at the library. Wait.. oh no, you can't go to the NY Public Library!! That's the infamous site of the disastrous wedding with Big where he stood her up and she had the bird on her head! What to do?
Come on - isn't this better than a stuffy British downstairs neighbor who boils tea?
Seema Patel: Since this is my own page, I'm going to say it. Sarita Choudhury is not Gujarati (her family is Bengali). She doesn't look Gujarati and I don't accept her as a Patel -- so that throws me off EVERY time. They should have made her a Roy and had more puns ("Seema Roy has found her boy-toy" "Seema Roy has found her joy" "Seema Roy is finally employed"). If you don't understand this rant, ask your Indian friends.
Now that's off my chest, I'm dying over her wardrobe. I love everything she wears!! The earthy palette
with the mixed metals. The flowy dresses are age and figure flattering, the shoes, the accessories! YES!! YES!. But y'all.. what was that eye patch? I wanted to fix it over her hair and make it cooler. (By the way, it's a very Samantha move to make an eye patch out of Louis Vuitton pouch). Also, how is my girl broke? She should have a lot of money from being a partner in the agency. And, why are you giving her a scruffy gardener? Yes, he's cute.. but give him something extra besides a t-shirt business. This is not gonna be a long term thing. They'll need to stop it.
Miranda: (I take an audible sigh before I write this) What happened? She was my favorite character in the original series - relatable and the voice of reason. Where did "Karaoke Miranda" come from? I'll accept the silver jumpsuit that doubles as a disco ball - pretty cool. But, the whole machine? This is a character who didn't want any frilly things at her baby shower. Yes, she's found joy in life, but you're still going to have a sense of taste. I harken back to the AJLT writers who say characters should change but be the same person - I don't think S&TC Miranda would've tolerated this one.Regarding Brady, why are they talking about him like he's 5? The other character Joy is too awkward and a hot mess. They're doing the Harry thing to her (keep reading).
Side note -- WHAT are the producers thinking bringing Patti LuPone AND Christopher Jackson (sorry, I swooned.. getting off the floor now) to a karaoke party and they do NOT sing? That's insane. They had better bring the machine back and let them sing. Do people bring Neil DeGrasse Tyson to parties and not ask him about the planets? Ok.. I'm going to wait and hope we get some tunes out of this cast. Christopher Jackson cannot throw away his shot..(sorry.. I had to)
Charlotte: Just rolling with her.
Harry: I've been upset with what they've done to Harry since the end of the series and into the movies. Charlotte fell for him because he had that powerful energy about him, boldly coming into the law office with a plan! He was funny and lovable, too. However, they turned him into a wet rag, and it's just gone downhill again. I miss the fiery Harry she had when they met. Now his daughters walk all over him too.
LTW: no comments really - I'm here for her clothes. I do question what this 8 year documentary is going to look like. I saw a comment that it looked like a Power point presentation. Did you need editors for that?
Let me know if you'd like me to continue commenting on the show. I had all these thoughts going on and needed to get them out!
